Asbestos can be found in any building built or refurbished before the year 2000 (houses, factories, offices, schools, hospitals, etc) and causes around 5000 deaths every year. That’s more than the number of people killed in road accidents!

It is a legal requirement for all non-residential properties to have an asbestos management plan in place in order to protect the health of workers undertaking maintenance on the property. Those responsible for working in commercial properties who fail to have a plan of action in place to deal with asbestos, and failure to put that plan into action can face a fine of up to £20,000 or up to 12 months imprisonment. Serious breaches of care over asbestos on-premises can carry unlimited fines and/or imprisonment up to two years.
