Asbestos Survey Godalming

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was first discovered thousands of years ago. People at that time would occasionally use it to create things like blankets, but for much of history, it remained little more than a curiosity. That all changed in the early 20th century when large-scale mining of asbestos commenced and manufacturers rushed to create new asbestos-based products for the home like insulation, ceiling tiles and countertops.

Shortly after large-scale mining began miners started to exhibit negative health effects but these were either attributed to other causes, dismissed outright or simply ignored. As the 20th century wore on, however, the negative health effects of asbestos exposure became too obvious to ignore and finally, in 1999 the UK government banned its use.

Although asbestos was banned 25 years ago the threat posed by legacy asbestos items in UK homes has not abated. In fact, according to government statistics, nearly 5,000 people continue to die every year in the UK from asbestos-related illnesses. Statistics like that drive home the need to continue to identify and remove asbestos wherever it is found.
