Asbestos was first discovered thousands of years ago and - because of its excellent insulation properties - was used by the ancient Greeks and others to create various items including blankets. But it remained something of a novelty and its dangers remained unknown and unsuspected.

In the early 20th century, however, large-scale asbestos mining began and it wasn't long before miners began to exhibit negative health effects. Still, these problems were largely dismissed and asbestos products proliferated. During the period ranging from 1950 to 1980, these products were installed in millions of homes right across the UK where they remain in place to this day.

Asbestos represents a unique, slow-motion threat. When asbestos insulation or tiles are first installed they pose very little risk (unless they are broken during or after installation). As the years pass, however, time takes its toll on these items and they inevitably begin to break down releasing the dangerous asbestos fibres into the air in ever-increasing amounts to be breathed in by you, your loved ones and your guests.
